What Happens During a Spinal Flow Session

During a Spinal Flow session, the client usually lies comfortably face down on a treatment table. If this is not suitable, the session can also be done lying on the side or sitting, ensuring the body remains supported and relaxed.

The practitioner applies gentle contact to specific points along the spine called access points. These points allow the practitioner to communicate with the nervous system through light touch, encouraging it to shift from a stress response into a more regulated state.

As the body begins to relax, natural wave-like movements may arise, travelling from the base of the spine up toward the brain. These movements are not created by the practitioner, but are the body’s own response. They help send signals through the nervous system, bringing awareness to areas along the spine that may have been holding stored tension or protective patterns.

At times, the nervous system can “tune out” or deprioritize certain areas of the body while in a protective state. During a session, this wave-like motion supports the restoration of clearer communication between the brain and body, allowing those areas to be gently reconnected.

As this process continues, the body may release stress layer by layer, and communication within the nervous system becomes more efficient. In this more regulated state — often described as rest, digest, and heal — the body is better able to repair, rebalance, and support its natural healing processes.

During the session, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid is also supported. As tension around the spine reduces, this fluid can circulate more freely, helping nourish the brain and spinal cord and further supporting clear communication within the nervous system.

Over time, Spinal Flow also helps retrain the nervous system to more easily shift from a fight-or-flight response into a rest, digest, and heal state. Session by session, the nervous system begins to remember what regulation and safety feel like. As the body becomes more familiar with this state, it can return to balance more easily, not only during sessions but also throughout everyday life.

In simple terms, the body begins to return to its natural flow and balance.
